Setanta Woodcraft

Fitted Furniture Co. Louth

Bespoke fitted wardrobe and bedroom furniture handcrafted by John McShane, Setanta Woodcraft, Carlingford Co. Louth

Fitted Furniture in Co. Louth, Built by Hand by Setanta Woodcraft

Most fitted furniture in Ireland comes from one of two places: a chain showroom with a catalogue and a fitting team, or a flat-pack system assembled by a general builder. Both can be made to look fine. Neither is built around your specific room by the person who will be responsible for the finished result.

Setanta Woodcraft & Carpentry is different. John McShane designs, builds, and fits every piece of furniture himself, from his workshop in Carlingford. No catalogue. No subcontracted fitting crew. No factory components dressed up as bespoke. What you commission is what gets built, to the exact dimensions of your room, using materials chosen for the job.

Setanta serves homeowners, developers, and hospitality businesses across Co. Louth, South Armagh, and the wider Dundalk-Newry corridor.

What Setanta Builds

Fitted Wardrobes and Bedroom Storage

The most common furniture commission. A fitted wardrobe built by Setanta is designed to the exact height, width, and depth of your room, using the wall space fully, including awkward corners, sloped ceilings, and alcoves that standard units cannot address.

Interior layout is designed around how you actually store clothing: hanging rails at the right heights, shelving sized for what goes on it, drawer units at a practical position. The result is storage that works every day, not a generic configuration applied to your room.

Fitted Dressing Rooms and Walk-In Wardrobes

For clients who want a dedicated dressing space, Setanta designs and builds walk-in wardrobes and full dressing rooms to specification. These range from a small converted bedroom alcove to a properly fitted room with floor-to-ceiling storage, mirror panels, and integrated lighting provisions.

Home Office Furniture

Fitted home office furniture is one of the fastest-growing commissions since 2020. A properly built home office, fitted to the wall, with a desk at the right height, storage designed for how you work, and cable management built in, is a significantly more functional workspace than a freestanding desk in a corner.

John builds home offices in both dedicated rooms and in dual-use spaces, where the office needs to coexist with a guest room or sitting room without looking like an intrusion.

Bespoke Dressers, Cabinets, and Console Units

One-off pieces of freestanding or semi-fixed furniture, designed and built to a brief. Dressers, media units, alcove shelving, sideboard cabinets, and console tables. These are often the result of a client looking for something specific that does not exist in a standard furniture range.

Living Room and Utility Storage

Alcove units, built-in shelving, utility room fitted storage, and bootroom seating with integrated storage beneath. Practical fitted furniture for every room in the house.

Materials

Setanta works in solid hardwoods and quality painted finishes. The right material depends on the room, the style, and the budget.

  • Solid oak: warm grain, ages beautifully, suits traditional and contemporary interiors
  • Painted finish on moisture-resistant MDF: clean, contemporary, can be painted to any colour specification
  • Birch ply carcasses: the structural backbone of all fitted pieces, dimensionally stable and resistant to the damp cycles an Irish home produces
  • Walnut: premium choice for statement pieces where the grain and colour are central to the design

All hardware, hinges, drawer runners, and soft-close mechanisms are specified for durability, not for margin.

Service Area

Setanta is based in Carlingford and works across:

  • Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula: Omeath, Greenore, Kilkeel
  • Dundalk and Co. Louth: the largest urban catchment, new builds and renovations
  • Newry and South Armagh: cross-border commissions for homeowners and developers
  • Wider border region: by arrangement for the right project

If you are within 30-40 minutes of Carlingford, contact John directly to discuss your project.

What Fitted Furniture Costs from Setanta

Every project is priced individually based on size, materials, and complexity. These are realistic 2026 ranges for the Louth and Armagh market, covering design, build, and installation:

PieceTypical Range
Single fitted wardrobe, painted finish€2,500 to €4,500
Master bedroom wardrobe run, solid hardwood€5,000 to €9,000
Walk-in dressing room€8,000 to €18,000
Fitted home office, single room€3,000 to €7,000
Bespoke dresser or cabinet€2,000 to €5,000
Alcove shelving and storage unit€1,500 to €3,500

These figures cover carpentry and fitting. Electrical work for integrated lighting is a separate trade.

The same principle applies here as with kitchens: a well-built fitted wardrobe in birch ply with solid hardwood or quality painted doors, properly fitted and maintained, will last twenty-five years without structural problems. A budget fitted wardrobe in chipboard, in an Irish bedroom with normal humidity variation, will often show problems inside ten years.

If your budget and brief do not align, John will tell you clearly at the site visit stage rather than adjust the spec downward without telling you.

The Process

Step 1: Site visit John comes to your home, measures the space, and understands the brief. For bedroom furniture this includes discussing clothing volume, storage priorities, and what specific items need to be accommodated.

Step 2: Design and quote A design drawing and written quote follow within a week. All materials, dimensions, and costs are specified upfront.

Step 3: Workshop build The furniture is built in the Carlingford workshop, typically over three to six weeks depending on complexity.

Step 4: Installation John fits the furniture himself. Installation typically runs one to three days for a bedroom wardrobe set, longer for a full dressing room.

Step 5: Handover John walks you through the finished piece, including how to adjust any hinges or runners over time and how to care for the finish.

Why Fitted Furniture from a Sole Craftsman

The difference between commissioning fitted furniture from Setanta and ordering from a furniture company is not just one of quality, though quality is part of it.

It is a matter of accountability. John is the single person who designed your wardrobe, built every carcass and door in it, and fitted it to your wall. If anything needs attention, you speak to the person who made it. That relationship does not exist with a company. It only exists when you commission a craftsman directly.

Setanta works across the same territory covered by the fitted kitchens service. Clients who commission a kitchen often return for bedroom furniture, a home office, or a living room piece. The quality is consistent because the person doing the work is the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build to match furniture already in my home? Yes. If you have an existing piece, a particular wood tone, or a finish that needs to be matched, John will design and build to complement it. Bespoke means built around your space and your existing interior, not around a product range.

Do you fit furniture in new builds as well as existing homes? Yes. Setanta works with both homeowners renovating existing rooms and with developers fitting out new builds in Dundalk, Newry, and across the border region.

How long does the full process take? From first contact to completed installation, most bedroom furniture projects take eight to fourteen weeks, depending on where John is in his schedule and the complexity of the commission. He will give a realistic timeline at quote stage and stick to it.

Can you fit wardrobes floor to ceiling? Yes, and this is usually the right approach for a fitted wardrobe. Floor-to-ceiling units maximise storage, eliminate the dust-gathering gap above standard-height wardrobes, and look more intentional. John accounts for ceiling variation and any coving at design stage.
